Making Money Without a Second Job

The fastest though not easiest way of making money is to get a job or a second job. What if your work schedule has been cut but is too irregular to take on another commitment? What if there are few formal jobs hiring? What are your options for making money without a second job?

Making Money Without a Second Job:

1. If you recycle, you have already sorted out the aluminum and steel and plastics. Instead of putting it out for the city recycling program to collect and sell, take these materials to the local materials buyer yourself. Do be careful on volume so that you get enough money to more than cover the cost of gas to get there.

2. Selling your own things in a garage sale or ebay.com is one option. So is selling what others have asked you to sell for them. A third option is to recycle and sell. Drive past homes on trash day and look for perfectly good furniture, large toys, and other items that have been put out for trash collection. When it is in the trash, it is fair game to be taken by others. (Think freecycling.) Then take it home, clean it up, take some pictures, and list it for sale.

3. Are there any services that you perform that are value to others? A second job generates both taxable income and can require a time commitment. Consider instead bartering those services. Join a babysitting coop and baby sit other children in addition to your own so that you can use the credited time when you do get formal employment to save on childcare costs for a few weeks. Send your son to mow the lawn of someone who can do haircuts to save on that expense.

Note: If you barter goods and services with a business, the value of the exchange is legally considered reportable and taxable to the IRS. Exchanges of favors are not considered such.
